Famous Jews in History: Irvin Kershner (1923–2010)

Irvin Kershner wasn’t an obvious choice to direct a Star Wars film.

He didn’t come from science fiction or action films. His work was focused on people and relationships.

Kershner was born in 1923 in Philadelphia to Jewish immigrant parents. He trained in music and art, and came into filmmaking through visual storytelling. He later taught film at the University of Southern California. One of his students was George Lucas.

After the success of the first Star Wars film, Lucas didn’t choose a blockbuster director for the sequel. He chose his former teacher.

Kershner approached the film differently to what Lucas had done previously.

The Empire Strikes Back is darker, more character-driven, and less certain. The hero struggles. The story carries weight.

It’s widely considered the best Star Wars film.

If the movie hadn’t worked, the trilogy likely wouldn’t have continued.

George Lucas may have created Star Wars, but it was Irvin Kershner who helped turn it into something lasting.
