Israeli Innovation: Aleph Farms

What if you could have meat without the animal? That’s the idea behind Aleph Farms.

Founded in Israel in 2017, the company grows beef directly from animal cells. The result is real meat, not a plant substitute, produced in a controlled environment.

Instead of raising entire animals, Aleph Farms recreates the natural process that grows muscle tissue, giving cells the conditions they need to develop into meat.

The aim is to reduce the environmental impact of meat production while still feeding a growing global population. It uses less land and water and produces fewer emissions.

It also raises new questions in Jewish law. Some rabbinic authorities say cultivated meat could be kosher. Because it isn’t taken from a slaughtered animal, some opinions suggest it may even be considered pareve.

So in the process of creating a sustainable meat alternative, Aleph Farms may inadvertently be responsible for the greatest achievement in the history of kashrut: the kosher cheeseburger.
