Israeli Innovation: Waze

Waze began with a simple idea: people on the road know what is actually happening better than any central authority.
What began as the project "FreeMap Israel" in 2006, Waze changed how navigation works by trusting people on the road to report what was actually happening, rather than relying only on centrally updated maps.
Drivers share real-time information about accidents, road closures, hazards, and congestion, and that information is instantly reflected for everyone else using the app. The result is safer travel, quicker decisions, and fewer people stuck relying on outdated data.
Waze does not try to persuade users or tell them what to think. It gives them accurate, current information and trusts them to act on it.In that way, it reflects a distinctly Israeli approach to innovation: practical, grounded, and built around shared responsibility rather than authority.
