Maimonides (1135–1204) was one of Judaism’s greatest scholars — a philosopher, physician, and legal authority. In his Mishneh Torah, he explained the shofar’s call as a spiritual wake-up: “Awake, sleepers, from your sleep! Examine your deeds and return in repentance.”
For Rambam, Rosh Hashana was about more than ritual. It was about renewal — a chance to reset, reflect, and start fresh each year. His words are still quoted in synagogues today, reminding us of the power of beginnings.
