Known as the “Jewish Mark Twain,” Sholem Aleichem (1859–1916) was one of the most beloved Yiddish writers of all time. His humorous yet deeply human stories about Tevye the dairyman captured the struggles and joys of Jewish shtetl life in Eastern Europe.

Decades later, those stories became the basis for Fiddler on the Roof, bringing Jewish voices and values to Broadway and beyond. He showed the world that Jewish storytelling could be universal, timeless, and proud.
