Famous Jews in History: Chanah's seven sons

The story of Chanah and her seven sons takes place during the persecutions of King

Antiochus IV in the second century BCE, the same oppression that led to the Maccabean revolt and the Chanukah story. Antiochus tried to erase Judaism by force: banning Shabbat, outlawing brit milah, defiling the Temple, and demanding Jews worship Greek gods.

A Jewish mother and her seven sons were ordered to bow to an idol and eat pork as a public renunciation of Judaism. Each child was promised life if he complied. Each refused. One after another, they were killed in front of their mother.

Chanah did not break. She told her sons that power can kill a body, but cannot destroy a

Jewish soul. These were children who understood that identity is non-negotiable, and a mother who believed that Jewish survival depends on spiritual resistance.

Their memory strengthened Jewish confidence and fed the spirit of the Maccabean revolt.

Their message remains sharp: Jews do not bow to those who try to erase them.
