Joseph Trumpeldor was a soldier, a pioneer, and one of the earliest figures to insist that Jewish dignity meant Jewish responsibility. Born in 1880 in the Russian Empire, Trumpeldor lost his left arm while serving in the Russo-Japanese War. He refused a discharge and continued to serve, an early sign of the outlook that would define his life. Later, he became a central figure in the early Zionist movement, helping establish Jewish self-defence and agricultural settlements in the Land of Israel. Trumpeldor is most remembered for his final words, spoken after he was mortally wounded while defending the settlement of Tel Hai in 1920: “It is good to die for our country.” There is debate about the exact wording, but the line endured because it reflected how Trumpeldor lived. He did not romanticise death. He normalised responsibility. Jewish safety, in his view, was not something to be negotiated or outsourced. Trumpeldor did not argue that Jews deserved dignity. He assumed it, and acted accordingly. That assumption, simple and unflinching, became his legacy.
